The house of Rep. Proposed to change Nigeria to UAR (United African Republic or United Alkebulan Republic) on 2 June, 2021.
Before we go in to that, let understand how the name Nigeria came on board.

Nigeria was named on January 8, 1897, by British journalist Flora Shaw, who later married Lord Lugard, a British colonial administrator who amalgamated the southern and northern states. Nigeria was derived from the word “Niger River”.

The name was given to her(Nigeria) to unite and bring together the major ethnic groups (Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa) as one country and one family.

With the look of the situation in Nigeria today, the Nigeria has been jeopardized by violence attack caused by different people who never think of uniting the country.

IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) has been a problem to Nigeria since 1963 when it was declared as a Republic by Col. Ojukwu. Southeastern part of Nigeria has been lacking power, they’ve not be voted in as a president since Nigeria received their independence in 1960.

Northern states have been in seat of power from the independent till date.

With the look of things, Nigeria is not United and will not be United if certain things are not considered, most especially the southern part has to be treated equally with the northern part.

Insecurity has also been a major issue in term of being United, killings in igbo land, hausa land and yoruba. This is a discouragement towards the plan to change to name to United African Republic.

Racism is another cause while Nigeria can never be united, not accepting ourselves as brothers and sisters as caused problem that have even affected the economy of the country.
